I've identified some SERIOUS I/O issues in the 70.7 Rhel5 kernel. If I run a moderately-loaded VE on the server, and cat a large SQL file into MySQL to create a new database in another VE, the first VE essentially blocks all disk I/O.

I had this problem before while running my nightly backups but it never got resolved. However I think this is much more serious as it means one VE can bring down another. I happened to be able to run a test between this kernel and the same machine/ve combination running the 68.5 kernel and 68.5 doesn't exhibit this problem. However, 68.5 has other problems.

Any recommendations for a kernel that doesn't have I/O problems? Anyone using the testing kernels in a production environment? Anyone else having this problem?

I to have noticed that the newest kernel downgraded our HD i/o. We have to live with it unfortunately since any older kernel has the 64Bit vulnerabilities. I wish we could go back to an older kernel for better performance, hopefully the new kernel(s) will improve the HD i/o performances.

In desperation I tried the 2.6.18-194.17.1.el5.028stab077.1 kernel from the testing branch (after testing it on a couple of i386 machines for a few days). It seems to have alleviated the problem and hasn't crashed yet, so it might be a good alternative.

I'd be interested to hear if it helps you as well because I am considering rolling it out to all of our machines.

Yes, I did file a bug but I never got any meaningful response.
