Hi guys,

Just to tell you, my little 'vzgot' experiment reached a working stage.

I was able to run a wide range of distribution rh7.3, rh8.0, rh9, fc2 ->fc12 and Centos-4.[6,7,8], Centos-5.[2,3,4], rhel-4 on a recent unmodified kernel (2.6.31.6-162.fc12).

I was able to rpmbuild clamav on those 33 distributions, so I am confident enough about reliability (charge reached 70.0 the hardware host (a Dell-2800)).

VE network is working fine (VE yum usage is fully working).
Next step is to work on ressources contention (cgroup).

ftp://ftp.safe.ca/pub/linux/vzgot/
Theoretically RPM is comprehensive enough to allow you to duplicate result.

Please give me feedback.

Cgroup and LVM are now part of the package.
Unbuntu 9.04 and 8.04 (Debian template) are now
available as VZ.
A QUICK-START file, give the 5 easy step to
install Template.

Excuse my ignorance but I don't understand what this thread is about and I and curious about it. Is there an OpenVZ with a 2.6.31 kernel?

Concerns expressed in another forum thread was about openvz kernel
patch not ported to recent kernel.
Purpose of my post was to show lastest kernel
(at least 2.6.31) allow to have VZ capability WITHOUT need to patch kernel.
(my goal was to be able to run many linux distribution,
oldest being rh7.3 as VZ on that kernel).

In fact there is still a small problem with /proc/kmsg
which is not (yet) virtualized, meaning container(VZ)
syslogd deamon read the SAME /proc/kmsg as the HOST /proc/msg.
(which cause trouble on reading kernel messages).

Linux container developer are aware about this and have
scheduled to modify kernel printk.c to resolve the issue.

I was wondering at what point OpenVS would no longer need a special kernel. At what point will the standard kernel support OpenVZ?

Depends what are your needs.
What we have implemented is already fulfilling our purpose
(compiling same product under different Linux distribution)
with container (VZ compatible) under kernel 2.6.31,
but I won't use them yet in an hostile environment.

I suppose what I want to do is install the standard kernel rather than the OpenVZ kernel and have OpenVZ just run. Is that something that's coming?

Yes,
Install a plain fc12 distribution (to get the latest kernel),
grab vzgot and play with it.
(the whole purpose to have vzgot avail is to allow people to use it and give feedback).
You have 3 templates (centos,fedora,ubuntu) and a QUICK-START file.

I'm confused about what vzgot has to do with OpenVZ? What I'm talking about is when I can run a stock kernel to rum OpenVZ rather than an OpenVZ kernel.

Vzgot use the same template as the one used in openvz (compatible)
creating the VZ is different, because kernel
implementation is not the same.
(ex: cgroup is used to do resource limitation)
You can use LXC (already referred in this list), which too
work on recent kernel.
