Is there a nice way to figure out which VPS a process belongs to? (i.e. short of going through /vz/root/*/proc and seeing if #### exists there?)

There is a program vzpid in vzctl packet.
# vzpid 6705
Pid     VPSID   Name
6705    201     syslogd

You can also use modified ps/top utilities to see VE processes:
http://download.openvz.org/contrib/utils/vzprocps-2.0.11-6.1 2.swsoft.src.rpm

-E option given to vzps adds VEID column to its output.
-E <VEID> option shows processes of given VE only.
