Im trying to install an application which requires the linux-headers, but I cannot find it for the kernel version I am running which is: 2.6.18-128.2.1.el5.028stab064.7.

apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.18-128.2.1.el5.028stab064.7 returns nothing. google searching for this version found nothing.

Is there a way I can upgrade the kernel within the VPS to one that has linux-headers?

I am running Debian 5 Lenny on a VPS with OpenVZ.

Where have you got your kernel from? I.e. what repository?

Maybe what you look for is called kernel-devel or ovzkernel-devel or something similar...

the kernel was already installed on the OS template. From what i read so far you cant upgrade the kernel on the vps, because it uses the same kernel as the host openvz.

But i cant find the headers/source for that kernel anywhere... and my vps provider says i can upgrade the kernel and use grub to load it but their directions dont work and now im not so sure they know what they are talking about.

Hmm... why you need a kernel (or kernel sources, or kernel headers) inside a VPS?

I am installing the dahdi-linux drivers to compile asterisk from source.

I was able to find what I needed at: http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/rhel5/028stab064.7

If I were using an rpm based OS I would have to install the ovzkernel-2.6.18 and ovzkernel-devel for the linux-headers. As far as I know these RPMs wont work on debian 5 as Ive tried using alien to convert to deb and install but it only ended up hosing the OS.

You can try using

rpm2cpio kernel-devel*.rpm | cpio -id
