Sorry for the indirect answer, but I have this setup working on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS using 2.6.24. I simply installed an OpenVZ kernel and tools from the repo then apt-get installed kvm. The kernel module compilation and everything else is automatic - I highly recommend it. I assume the same goes for Debian Lenny on 2.6.26. Maybe you have another machine that could be your temporary VZ host while you setup your current host with a new OS?

Have you seen the page here: http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/KVM? Maybe that will work but I'd highly recommend Debian/Ubuntu for the newer tools/kernel!
