I am not sure if it is a bug in gnome or openvz patch; but it only happen in combination. Post here is anyone has the same problem or any idea how to fix/debug it, if no one has then I am going to file a bug report ! Smile

Step to reproduce.

* Compile kernel 2.6.27 with patch-briullov.1-combined.gz patched.
* Run Ubuntu Jaunty. Insert cdrom or usb storage ; gnome popup the window with content of device. Close window , right click the cdrom desktop ison select unmount or eject. Message saying can not be unmount / eject device is busy (or some other apps still trying to access it)

* Start a terminal, sudo to root, unmount /media/cdrom0 saying device busy. Run lsof | grep '/media' does not show anything.

* Logout of gnome, and switch to text console (Ctrl+Alt+F2 ); login sudo to root and I can unmount it. Or login but using another wm like icewm I can umount it.

* This does not happen with Ubuntu default kernel, Or non openvz patch 2.6.27 kernel (I tried 2.6.27.29)

That's a strange thing.
I just can't imagine how OpenVZ can affect it.
But do you have a chance to check other OpenVZ kernels (at lest one)?
Anyway, don't hesitate to create a new bug report.
Thank you.

Indeed it is strange. For the reason of hardware support, I have to stick to 2.6.27 but I will try the other one on Vbox machine.

I narrowed down to nautilus. Run icewm, if use thunar I can still mount/unmount as normal. If start nautilus and use nautilis mount the device, then quit the nautilus window, can not unmount. Run lsof in this case showing nautilus still access it. (that is unlike when run in gnome). But even I kill -15 nautilus process and lsof shows nothing now, I still not be able to unmount it y anymeans aother then logout of the session and relogin again.

As I am not sure if this is openvz bug (I think it is unlikely; or the bug in nautilus and get triggered by openvz patch; but the fact is, thunar using HAL to get the device and mount as well and it does not have problem (so not HAL problem), I tends to think it is nautilus problem and triggered by openvz patch. Not sure where to bug it though Sad.

Hello,

did you have a chance to check another OpenVZ kernel?
Anyway, if you face with the problem that cannot be triggered with standard OS kernel just create a new bug report. Perhaps, it makes things better. I mean not only OpenVZ perfection Smile

Just test with kernel-smp-2.6.18-ovz028stab056.1.x86_64.rpm from http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/2.6.18/028stab056.1

and it has same problem. One more hint is that it seems to relate to gnome-gfs. The reason is, I tried completely replace nautilus in gnome by using another file manager (even not loading the dekstop background so nautilus has never been started) and problem still persists. So I guess if I run nautlus not in gnome ; nautilus initialises gnome-gfs anyway (?) whihc made me think it is nautilus ..

For now I am forced to use xfce and file manager is thunar to avoid the tedious process log out, Ctrl+Alt+F2 to enable console login and unmount the thing and relogin.

I swear that if it does not happen with fedroa 11 whihc I am going to test, I will switch to fedora 11 Smile

update:
And kernel ovzkernel-2.6.18-128.2.1.el5.028stab064.7.x86_64.rpm is unbootable, it hangs in the boot process and bomb out with OOM message: Out of memory and no killable process!

Such things should go directly to bugzilla.
At least with a photo of a screen Smile
