I'm running vmlinuz-2.6.24-19-openvz. I've got a VE running Ubuntu 8.04 server.

I seem to be having some trouble logging kernel messages in the VE. Specifically, I was trying to log dropped packets from iptables. For a while I concentrated my efforts there, but after digging in it looks like kernel logging just isn't working right.

I read that klogd is not started by default in the VE. However, I couldn't start it. It just sat there for about five minutes and then reported a fail.

In my messages log I had:

Mar 31 13:13:01 www syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart.
Mar 31 13:13:11 www kernel: Cannot find map file.
Mar 31 13:13:11 www kernel: No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled.
Mar 31 13:19:08 www exiting on signal 15

...and in my kern.log file:

Mar 31 13:13:11 www kernel: Cannot find map file.
Mar 31 13:13:11 www kernel: No module symbols loaded - kernel modules not enabled.

The output of dmesg did, however, show the dropped packets I was trying to capture.

Ok, so I read some messages here and uninstalled klogd and syslogd and installed syslog-ng . It appears to be running ok and no errors have been reported. The last line in my messages log is:

Mar 31 13:19:19 www syslog-ng[3390]: syslog-ng starting up; version='2.0.9'

I'm still not getting any dropped packets logged (ipt_logging is enabled for the VE).

Help!

Nevermind, it seems to be working with syslog-ng.
