Since everyone was on the edge of their seats ... I figured I would report back and say that upgrading my kernel on my RHEL 4 host made the Ubuntu 8.04 template boot correctly.

The template I created still doesn't work, but now I have made some forward progress and hopefully can get that last bit worked out.
