I just had this weird thing happened today.

I have a container with both venet and veth created .

venet has ip 10.48.5.201
veth has ip 10.48.5.211

From my windows box, I can ping 10.48.5.211 no problem. but when I ping 10.48.5.201 , this is what came out :

Pinging 10.48.5.201 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 10.48.5.201: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 10.48.5.201:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 1, Lost = 3 (75% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 1ms

And the weirdest thing is that I can ping 10.48.5.201 from all other linux OS. But the windows just don't have a positive response for it. Most of the time I can't even get one ping at all.

Please Help

did you ping your VPS only from other VPS's and the HN or also from other physical linux machines? try running a bootable linux-cd on your windows machine to see if the error presists.

I would suspect a defect NIC, either on the windows box or the HN. the windows ping works not as acurate as the unix version. I once had a defect NIC that responded to each request two times, which the unix ping was able to detect but the microsoft version wasn't.

greetings,
joe

ps: also try tracerouting to the destination (a few times). maybe the error lies somewhere along the way ,)

I ping my VPS from different physical HN and the vps inside them. The windows that I used is actually running as a VirualBox vm on my local computer. So I guess this makes the situation more complicated.
