Hi,

Following issue.

New server, with 3wsare 9650 raid card.
Default kernel 2.6.18-6 supports this card.
However, openvz 2.6.18 does not Sad

After spending many hours searching the net, I finally have (after test & trial) got this version of OpenVZ kernel working:

nononsense:~# uname -a
Linux nononsense 2.6.18-openvz-18-51.3d2-686 #1 SMP Tue Feb 12 09:56:11 CET 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

But, server is equipped with 8GB RAM, and this version of kernel only shows 4 Sad

Is there a way to get bigmem version of this kernel? Or tweak kernel so it does support 8GB ram? I have already changed in config:

CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G=y
CONFIG_RESOURCES_64BIT=y

No other settings ring a bell, so haven't changed them.

====

Also, any other kernel that supports 3ware + 8 GB is welcome Smile

====

Thanx in advance! Spasiba Wink

Cheers,
Aleks

Hi,

Yes, I did. That one is in the apt-get sources also, but it does not recognise 3ware raid for some reason Sad

I will try to compile it with the 3ware drivers, to see if I can jump start it.

Hello,

could you possibly tell what kind of controller do you have (lspci output would be useful too), what driver's version is required?

This was done from:
Linux nononsense 2.6.18-6-686 #1 SMP Fri Dec 12 16:48:28 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I have installed all (!!) of these kernels, but non will work properly:

linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-12-1-686 - Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.18-openvz-12-1-686
linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-12-1etch1-686 - Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.18-openvz-12-1etch1-686

linux-image-2.6.24-openvz-24-004.1d3-686 - Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.24-openvz-24-004.1d3-686

Only one of them booted up properly, that was:
linux-image-2.6.18-openvz-13-51.3d1-686 - Linux kernel binary image for version 2.6.18-openvz-13-51.3d1-686

However, this one shows up only 4GB of RAM, while there is 8GB present in the server. OpenVZ does work properly in it, but I really need all 8GB Smile)

I have tried to re-compile that kernel to make it work with 8GB, but with no success.

Thanx in advance.
Cheers,
Aleks

What I do not quite understand is the following.

Clean debian installation of kernel 2.6.18-6 works fine.
But, if I install:
fzakernel-2.6.18-686-bigmem
which should resamble original kernel distro, then it doesnt work Sad

I am really stuck with this one...

Maybe if we approach it like this:

nononsense:~# uname -a
Linux nononsense 2.6.18-openvz-18-53.5d1-686 #1 SMP Sat Mar 22 19:27:07 CET 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

Loads up, all seems oke, tho' raid controller is unknown, but no crashing Smile
OpenVZ and all can be installed.

If I could now get my hands on this kernel, to compile it with 64GB support...?

Regards,
Aleks

For the time beeing, we have installed CentOS. No problems there at all, 3Ware is recognised, as well as 8GB RAM...

I would though love to see this one solved, as I am addicted to Debian Smile

are the kernels you tried from the repository at
http://debian.systs.org/ ?

i had a debian kernel vmlinuz-2.6.18-ovz-028stab051.1-smp up and running with the 3ware9650 (i ran ubuntu on it).
now i'm using 2.6.22-ovz005 which i believe i got from http://wiki.openvz.org/Download/kernel/2.6.22/2.6.22-ovz005. 1
and it also works fine.
i've already installed the kernel ubuntu offers, but i haven't got to test them properly (but they found the 3ware controller). ubuntu also offers amd64 kernels.

best regards...
