I am using Kubuntu 8.04 with a linux 2.6.24-23-generic kernel. I have tried to install OpenVZ using apt-get install linux-openvz. I have the following error message:

sudo apt-get install linux-openvz
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies.
linux-openvz: Depends: linux-image-openvz (= 2.6.24.16.18) but 2.6.24.23.25 is to be installed
E: Broken packages

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

It seems to be a problem with dependencies. Maybe you cannot install OpenVZ in Kubuntu these days (as a matter of fact, I've never heard so far of anybody doing it).

I've run OpenVZ in Ubuntu 8.10 Server Edition and I'm using CentOS 5 now. In both cases without problems (although I haven't done much).

Still,

The packages being maintained by the Ubuntu people, you should check their forums first for any previous similar issues than file a bug report.

You could also insist by compiling a kernel by hand. That should solve your issue since you'll be working around the package manager if waiting for a fix takes too long.
