Hi,

I have read a bit about OpenVZ but can't find an answer.

Is it necessary to use an OS Template when you install an OS in a container?

Of course, yes.

The created VE should be based on a particular distr.
You can use either template metadata to build the template or can use precreated templates.

Please read very useful doc http://download.openvz.org/doc/OpenVZ-Users-Guide.pdf
