Sorry but I've read everywhere and I don't get it:

vzctl set 101 --ipadd 192.168.1.101 --save

I've added an IP address to VE and the HN can ping it, but it doesn't get outside of the HN

That IP address is on the same network as my other machines.
Does the IP address have to be assigned to the HN for it to work?

no, it doesn't.

Please, check your sysctl options.

P.S. Are you sure that 192.168.1.101 is workable IP address, i.e. are you able to set any ip address or it somehow intersects with your local network policy?
