Hi!
So I'm fighting a holy war here with my lead. We're planning
for a virtualized environment - around 60 physical hosts and somewhere around 250 VMs initially but will grow in the future). The battle is between OpenVZ on hosts with Enomalism as glue/management and VMWare ESXi with Virtual Center on the the other front. I'm sticking to first because we have Linux hosts and Linux guests so there's absolutely no reason for going hw/hypervisor at it. Too much drag and vz tools are easy to use and wrapped in some automation helpers.
I have two arguments from the "enemy" I'm finding hard to break ( small technical and practical details don't matter for some reason ) :
- VMWare is used by biggest companies out there, ESXi is free
- OpenVZ is community supported and Virtuozzo, including management software, is (still) billed on a per-cpu basis
And the questions:
- any popular company out there running 300-400 OpenVZ virtual machines ? Interesting to know about web shops rather the virtual hosting providers.
- any rumors about Virtuozzo following ESXi for physical hosting licenses ?
- any idea if it's possible ( and supported ) a mix of Virtuozzo management suite with physical nodes running OpenVZ ?
- any horror/success stories about mixing OpenVZ and Enomalism ?
