[root@Char ~]# uname -a
Linux Char.ICS.local 2.6.18-53.1.19.el5.028stab053.14 #1 SMP Thu May 8 16:29:13 MSD 2008 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
[root@Char ~]# vzctl
vzctl version 3.0.22

The user of an fc7 VPS was complaining about the password getting reset... so I used the vzctl command to reset the password, which it reported was successful. However, I cannot login with the password I just set. I tried making a new user, but that doesn't set either.

Well you can try to remove the user (after moving /home/user to /home/user_tmp) then add it again and move the home to the correct place, see if this works.

I did try with a brand new user and had the same result.

Would these failures be showing up in a log somewhere?

Of all the different VPSes that I have, the only two that have an auth.log file are Debian systems. This particular VPS is FC7.

johan, to isolate this problem, you should do the following:

after resetting the password, is the hash in /etc/shadow changed? If not, paste a strace of the passwd command. If yes, you are totally locked out of the VE for any users (except for vzctl enter) because you are unable to set any passwords, correct?

Rick

I cannot login with any users I have tried, both existing, and new. The shadow file changes.

I have never heard of this problem. Do you see the same problem with other OS templates? Is the OS template unmodified from the openvz site?

This is the only Fedora Core 7 VE I have, and it initially worked. Someone else has been using this VE, so I don't know what's different.

My CentOS 4 VEs work fine.

Seems like an application level issue and not related to openvz at all. I would treat the VE as compromised/mangled and reinstall with a fresh distro.

I did create a new VE, but kept the old one around if anyone wanted to try to figure it out.
