I have a machine with 4GB RAM. I have 2 VPS's on it. Each one has 512MB guaranteed RAM and 1024MB burstable however the memory on the node looks like this.

[root@openvz1 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3943 3690 252 0 357 2915
-/+ buffers/cache: 417 3525
Swap: 4094 0 4094

I was working on one of the VPS's when I got an error I am limited to 334MB RAM when the main node is running out of memory.

My question is how is the machine running out of memory when I have only 2 VPS's on it and none of those VPS's use the memory nor I have anything else running on the main server which would use the RAM. What can be done in this case?

Hi, which number exactly in the free output are you concerned with? The answer to your question is likely that Linux, like all modern operating systems, cache disk pages in unused memory. The Linux Page Cache.

I know it caches it however I am concerned why OpenVZ thinks the main node is running out of memory?

Tell us why you think openvz thinks the node is running out of memory.

try and be more specific:

"I see value XX in output YY but I feel it should be ZZ because AA".

As I said in my first post, I was working in one of the VPS's when I got a message that my script cannot be executed because I am limited to 334MB of memory when the server node is running out of free memory. In the meantime, the VPS itself is limited to 512MB guaranteed RAM and 1024MB burstable and as you can see the main node has lots of cached RAM (free ram). Why did I get that message I am limited to 334MB?
