could you please tell me exact versions (including architectures) of the OpenVZ kernel which hangs and the stock CenOS kernel which runs fine?

yes, you was said true in the thread in support - you tried to boot i386 kernel on a 64bit node: this should not and won't work.
Please, try to boot 64bit OpenVZ kernel.
