Unfortunately our 2.6.20/22/24 kernels are not stable now.
I would recommend you to check rhel5-based 2.6.18 kernel. IMHO last ones use libata drivers and have sd-like devices.
Also you can try to use debian-based kernels provided by Thorsten Schifferdecker aka crux@
