Hi, I'm new to OpenVZ and would like to know if anyone knows if support for kernel 2.6.23 is planned and when it might happen. I am using Opensuse 10.3 and would like to try OpenVZ.

ey, thanks for the quick reply. In short I don't know if there are any kernel specific features that I would need from 2.6.23. I would simply like to stay with the stock kernel from Suse if possible. I tried searching in the forums first but did not find any similar post for Opensuse 10.3 or kernel 2.6.23. Sorry if I missed them Smile

I don't think this is possible (I don't think there is a suse-based openvz kernel available right now), but I'll let the developpers confirm.

Ok thanks. I am quite happy to try applying a kernel patch if that is available rather than download a complete kernel.

The latest seems to be 2.6.22. Do you know if this could be used on a 2.6.23 kernel?

Aren't odd-ending numbers supposed to be unstable/devel kernels? This means 23 would be unstable...

Made me think there..... I believe the confusion is over the kernel naming system changing. Previously the version naming used to be x.x.x with the second number referring to a stable or development branch (odd or even number). Starting with the 2.6 series the third number lost this relevance as there is no longer a stable and unstable branch. Then at 2.6.8 a fourth number was added (x.x.x.x) to indicate security or bug fixes only. See "Linux Kernel" at Wikipedia. Smile

The current 'stable' kernel is at the 2.6.23 series according to kernel.org. The default kernel on Opensuse 10.3 is the 2.6.22 series, but I have been using a more recent Opensuse realtime 2.6.23 kernel which is available from their repositories.

unfortunately at the moment we don't have a patch for 2.6.23.
Well, porting to each new kernel always takes a lot of resources and i suppose we'll skip the 2.6.23 kernel and will prepare the patch for 2.6.24 (after it is released).

Anyway, at the moment the latest stable kernel we have is based on 2.6.18 kernel, and if you really don't need any specific feature of the newer kernel i advise you to try 2.6.18 based OpenVZ kernel (especially if you trying the OpenVZ for the first time - at least to see if it works for you at all). And after the successful installation it's not too difficult the install the newer kernel. Smile

i hope such a kernel "downgrade" won't bring you any discomfort, but if yes - please, let us know.
