#uname -r
2.6.20-ovz007.1
# cat /etc/*release
Fedora release 7 (Moonshine)

I usually update my VPS applications via yum. My question is: can I safely install the latest FC7 kernel (2.6.23.8-34.fc7) via "yum install kernel" or should I NOT be doing that? If I install the new kernel, will it automatically come up on reboot? Thank you.

You could install the stock fedora kernel, but you'd have to edit manually grub.conf so that the openvz kernel boots. If you fail to do so and the stock kernel loads, your VE will not start.

Currently I do not see any grub.conf in my VE.
So I should make it up from scratch...
This is what I see in a "native" FC6 grub.conf:

title Fedora Core (2.6.20-1.2925.fc6)
root (hd1,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.20-1.2925.fc6 ro root=/dev/VolGroup01/LogVol00 rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.20-1.2925.fc6.img

but what about grub.conf for VE?
Is there a way I can gather the required inputs on my own?
or is this something I have to ask to my Hosting Service?
Thank you for your help.

Oh you only have a VE? you should not install the stock kernel at all then.

I got it. I should ask my Hosting Service to rebuild and install a new version of the *ovz* kernel, right? But then, if I cannot update the kernel on my own, I shouldn't even think of upgrading from FC_N to FC_N+1 via yum (a larger feat). Lacking any background, I am confused, as http://forum.openvz.org/index.php?t=tree&th=1970 seemed to indicate that such an upgrade is, at least in principle, possible.

Your provider will upgrade the kernel when he sees fit. You should ask your provider about upgrading your VE, I can't tell.
