Hi, I wonder why use OpenVZ instead of qemu or KVM?
What does OpenVZ has that is special?
I also wonder, can I change the size of my Harddrive when I made it with OpenVZ? After looking in the Documents I thought that I saw that I can tunnel it through VNC easy?
Well, let me know.

Cheers,
Robin

The think I like most about OpenVZ is its lightweight. On a PIII 1.2 with 1.7 GB RAM, I run 11 smal Virtual Environment, and the total or RAM used for all the VE is 638 MB.

Also, you should be using LVM if you want to be able to resize your /vz partition. You can also move your /vz to another partition if needed. You could even run one VE in /vz1 and another in /vz2 (but it is less easy to manage).

BTW, openvz is not making your hard drive. OpenVZ behaves like a regular linux host, so you can use all the usuall tools, mdadm, lvm, resize2fs, ext2online, etc.

About VNC? Yes, there is a way to run something like that, but I never did myself, I never install anything graphical on my servers.

Ok, so now I have OpenVZ vs KVM.
You told me that KVM had a Changeable size of HD?
And OpenVZ is made to run 1 OS Virtual with diffrent PCs in it? (Container)

From what I read, KVM looks more like xen. Needs virtualization-enabled processors, more overhead, but can run many OSs. OpenVZ has very low overhead, but can only run linux (only some distros).

You told me that KVM had a Changeable size of HD?

I don't know KVM at all. Are you talking about the host or the VM?

In openvz, you can resize the size of the HD of a VM with one command, while the VM is running.

And OpenVZ is made to run 1 OS Virtual with diffrent PCs in it? (Container)[/quote]

I don't understand this question.

Robin,

I think it depends more on what your target audience is. Both Xen & OpenVZ are great products and certainly their audiences overlap. At the core though, the idea behind OpenVZ is to increase the density of the number of virtual machines that can be run on a single hardware node. This is done through sharing a single running kernel between all of the virtual machines. In Xen on the other hand, the idea is to abstract the hardware entirely so that any OS (including Windows) can be run inside a virtual machine.

This means than while in OpenVZ it's not uncommon to run 10+ VEs on a single hardware node (and not unheard of to run hundreds) you would be hard pressed to get any where near those numbers with Xen.

As far as KVM goes, it's more or less Xen with a single VE inside of it so that if there is a kernel panic, you can still get to the box to do basic maintinence (basically a "poor man's" IPMI, iLO, etc).

Installing OpenVZ on Debian is well documented and very easy, if you use the packages which are supplied by Thorsten Schifferdecker:

http://debian.systs.org/

I habe been running Production Web Servers on OpenVZ using the debian.systs.org Kernels on Debian 4.0 since January 2007. They apparently *do* work.

Kind Regards
