Is it necessary to match the Host OS kernel and the OpenVZ kernel to be installed? The docs aren't very clear about what matching is needed, docs make it sound like selecting from anything within a major release is ok, but I don't really think that is right.

Claude,

While it's not necessary to match the pre/post-openvz kernel versions, you just need to take into account any prerequisites for kernel versions you may have due to hardware constraints, etc.

One more thing on that to keep in mind. Depending on your linux distro, you might want to use the kernel package most similar to your original distribution.

That way you can maintain your upgrades through the native package manager.
