The following will fix the problem(only until next VE start if you use udev)
vzctl exec 101 MAKEDEV ptys0

If you are using udev inside the VE, you might want to move to static /dev/ instide VE. Or you can make udev to use a precreated
tar ball of static devices first and then add it's own dynamically.

Hi

I'm having the same problem, but your suggestion doesn't work for me:

[root@gandalf ~]# vzctl exec 1001 MAKEDEV ptys0
[root@gandalf ~]# vzctl restart 1001
Restarting VE
Stopping VE ...
VE was stopped
VE is unmounted
Starting VE ...
VE is mounted
Setting CPU units: 1000
Configure meminfo: 256000
File resolv.conf was modified
VE start in progress...
[root@gandalf ~]# vzctl enter 1001
enter into VE 1001 failed
Unable to open pty: No such file or directory

did you verify that /dev/ptys0 continues to exist after you restart the 1001 VE? What distro template are you using and what device manager is running in it?
Also does vzctl enter 1001 works just after you create the ptys0
device without restarting the VE?

Hi

i have same issue. Is first time that i see this. Never happen before.
i followed steps wrote on forum

# vzctl exec 101 /sbin/MAKEDEV tty
# vzctl exec 101 /sbin/MAKEDEV pty
# vzctl enter 101

then i can enter normally but if i restart container the problem appears again

# Unable to open pty: No such file or directory

What can i do? and why does it happens? Kernel 2.6.18-92.1.1.el5.028stab057.2PAE using centos-5-i386-minimal. I build a debian container before and all works well

Thanks

Hello,

this could happen if you have udev installed inside your CT.
Please, look at our wiki page, hope it'll shed the light on your problem.

Hi Maratrus

yes, worked finally. But I don't know the source of the problem.

Why this issue didn't happen in older kernels? Is a issue of update kernel or a update rpm in VE (udev package)?

Thanks!!!

Hello,

the reason is udev package inside VE.
Creating pty,tty devices is only affected
the current VE being. Udev doesn't know anything
about that devices. It creates files according to own rules.
So, we have to tell udev to make that devices.

These instructions have solved me the same problem in different situations and different host/container versions:
sudo vzctl start 101
sudo vzctl exec 101 "cd /dev; /sbin/MAKEDEV pty"
sudo vzctl exec 101 "cd /dev; /sbin/MAKEDEV tty"
sudo vzctl exec 101 "update-rc.d -f udev remove"
sudo vzctl stop 101
sudo vzctl start 101
