I thought I'd give OpenVZ a try after doing some experimenting with Xen. I was able to install OpenVZ successfully on my CentOS 4.2 test box. As I was reading the documentation about the installation of new packages it mentions the use of vzyum (wrapper for yum). I'm wondering, is it possible for a root user of the VPS to install packages using the default yum package manager instead of using the wrapper? I'm assuming that building new packages from source or running RPM installs within the VPS are fine??

Thanks.

Sure! That wrapper is more for mass-management things (like, say, you want to upgrade all your VPSs).

Sure!

Please go ahead and then tell us what do you think about OpenVZ, how it compares to Xen etc.

Kir.

Just to clarify, you CAN use vzyum to install yum on a VPS and run yum from within the VPS. That's what I do.
