I am trying to install the x64 kernel on a x64 copy of CentOS 4.5

However it fails, and outputs the following, any idea on a fix, or advice.

it seems to be a bug. You might want to file a bug report on this.

http://bugzilla.openvz.org

Anyway, you might want to install the 32 bit kernel first?

I was told big performance decrease, being that it's an Athlon X2 4200+.

http://download.openvz.org/kernel/branches/2.6.20/2.6.20-ovz 007.1/kernel-2.6.20-ovz007.1.x86_64.rpm

I tried that and it installed smoothly. This is a fresh install (trying to make OpenVZ work for the first time).

if you have more than 1 processor, it is better that you install smp support Smile

It's okay, I have to give up anyway as the kernel doesn't include NVIDIA NIC support.

mkinitrd creates initrd image -- script that loads the drivers required for mounting root partition.
mkinitrd from CentOs4 distribution was tuned for RHEL4 (2.6.9) based kernels, knows nothing about more fresh kernels and therefore can fail on the some nodes.

If you wish to use 2.6.18 kenrels I would recommend you to install CehtOs 5 on HW node and then install RHEL5 based OpenVZ kernels.

ALso I would note that IMHO CentOs5 should support NVidia NIC on your node. And if it works on CentOs 5 kernel -- then it should works on the RHEL5-based OpenVz kernels too.

Thank you,
Vasily Averin
