I am able to create VEs properly with LiveCD but get ioctl errors when the same liveCD is installed on a hard disk.

Errors reported

vzquota : (error) Can't open quota file for id 220, maybe you need to reinitialize quota: No such file or directory

Performing postcreate actions

I think similar problems were reported with newly built kernels but I am puzzled as to why a HD install from the liveCD should behave this way. There was some install error that flashed by when installing from the liveCD but it did not seem to affect the install.

lmosd shows the following vzmodules installed
(I apologize for not adding the lsmod output but I am running
inside QEMU, so cut/paste is not working and net is not up yet.
And copying the entire lsmod output by hand is a trifle painful !
liveCD without HDD install was also run inside QEMU.)

vznetdev
vzethdev
vzrst
vzcpt
vzmon
vzdev
but vzdquota is missing in the HDD install

Let me know if need to look for any specific modules

Stack trace
--------------------------------------------------
strace is a little too large (to transcribe manually) but I get some idea of what went wrong

All the libvzctl libraries are missing in the HDD install.

In the CD install they are present in /usr/lib
(.la,.so,0.0.2.so )

In both cases looks like the vzctl utility searches for the libvzctl in quite a few locations.

there are some other files that both versions report as
not found in the stack trace but since those errors are
common I guess they do not matter.

Does this help or do you need the full trace ?

Can you tell us, please, what LiveCD do you use? And how have you produced installation on hard drive?

The latest liveCD from the site. Downloaded it yesterday.
It is based on the Knoppix 5.1.1

After booting the liveCD, I ran Knoppix-installer.
knoppix-installer is still not production, maybe it failed to
install properly. I redid the HDD install.
After the 2nd try, the libvzctl files are there
in the /usr/lib directory. I guess I have to send you the
trace after all.

This is not my preferred approach but my standard install is
Fedora 7 and there is no kernel for it yet. And the local
Linux CD retailer does not have Centos or Debian. And with a 128k line, download is not an option ! I guess I can do a minimal debian
etch install and use the debian kernel on the openVZ download site.

It would help if you have a minimal debian iso on your site.

I managed to get a minimal install of debian running with - netinst CD with standard package. This is less than 750 MB (no swap). This is a good version for appliances since it is sub- 1GB.

Looks like the problem was only with the Knoppix LiveCD HDD install. I will figure that out later, when I have time. But thanks everyone for your support.
